This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
