Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
